How Did You Hear About Us?:

The Aveda Institute Columbus offers a unique learning environment in cosmetology through hands-on, real-world experience. Located in Columbus, Ohio, we inspire students to exceed expectation and seek lifelong learning beyond the traditional classroom. Aveda believes that education encompasses more than learning basic technical skills. Our cosmetology curriculum is specifically designed to prepare beauty school students for the state licensing examination and allow them to learn the technical, personal and business skills necessary to work in a professional salon environment.

Whoa baby, I’m smooth

Waxing week draws to a close just in time for my follicles to not mutiny and abandon ship. I can say with complete confidence that contrary to my own belief going in, waxing the underarms was worse than the brazillian. It seems counter-intuative, but there you have it. That’s not to say that I’ll be doing ANY of it again, however, I’m sure it is a big question for everyone seeing as our class hasn’t gone a single day in four weeks without asking something about how waxing is done and how much it hurts. I can tell you one thing for sure: Nourished class is a place where you will find great sympathy if you’re new to hair removal. We were good to each other, and that I am proud of.

Probably as some sort of repeat/rebound of last week with overly stressing for our Build-A-Facial test, I ended up having a panic attack and crying because I was so worried I had hurt my partner for waxing. I recovered, obviously, when my instructor sat me down and pointed out that I had a very vocal partner who shortly after screaming in pain was laughing saying “it’s fine.” I seemed not to hear that part though. My partner was fine, I was fine, but it is silly to think that newcomers to brazillian waxing are going to be comfortable or even silent about what you’re doing. As my instructor said, it’s “not comfortable.” At least she’s succinct. Personally, I bit a towel the whole time and need to inhale during the pull. It is my ‘technique’ to dull the ‘discomfort.’ Don’t get me started on the underarms, though, I’m traumatized.

Also, THREE tests in one week?! Rough. I write a beauty blog in my spare time and have been hoping to do a few posts a week, but my brain has been going 100 miles an hour and just can’t go on once I leave school. I’m lucky I have the brain-power for homeplay. It was bound to happen like this because I started a full-time program after having no set schedule for several months, so I’m still adjusting. Others in the class seem to be doing quite a lot with their afternoons/evenings and weekends; I’ll get there soon.

Thoroughly Prepared

As St Patty’s Day approaches, I look forward to wearing a festive splash of green underneath my black Aveda uniform. You know, nothing fancy, just a green headband, necklace, earrings, eyeshadow, bracelets, rings, shoes, and a long sleeve shirt. Did I also happen to mention that green is my favorite color? As an added bonus, all this pent-up green-lusting will be well deserving of indulgence after this week of test after test. We have one on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, along with hands on waxing during the day.

Last week was so busy for the Nourished class: we had our own big test on Anatomy and our “Build-A-Facial” test. In the former, we studied from our book, completed our workbook and study guides, and sat down to a multiple choice test. In the latter, we put together our lessons from cleansing to massage to refinement to consultation with the guest and personally performed an entire Elemental Nature Facial for another classmate! This took longer than the usual 90 minutes it would take once we’re in the spa, but three weeks into the Aveda Institute program, I already know I can do a multi-part, customized facial for someone.

After over-stressing the night before I walked out of the testing practical room blown away by how naturally each step was starting to come and, in any case, how thoroughly prepared the Institute was making me in so short a time. Of course, when you’re learning about a special or focused field for 7.5 hours a day, you are bound to feel every week as if it’s a months worth of time and information.
So, as much as I’m not looking forward to being personally waxed everywhere ( and I mean EVERYWHERE), I know that we’re all getting valuable training and practice in doing these things the right way. I like to think my guests are going to be very happy with my skills and that I and my family will be very happy with my career after Aveda. Wish me luck on all those tests!

Hi, I’m Stephanie…

“Hi, I’m Stephanie and I’m studying esthiology.”  I must have said that over 30 times for the first three days at Aveda.  Our group needed to come up with fun facts about ourselves as well, but we all tried to come up with something new each time.

The first week (week and a half now) is all about getting acquainted, with each other, the products, the services, and Aveda – or rather the mission behind Aveda.  My paraphrased version is “help yourself by helping the world,” but the real mission is gorgeous (albeit a little hard to remember after a week).  I want to point out that I am not a social butterfly but I’ve already met some fantastic people and we’re becoming fast friends.

Your Aveda instructors are wonderful, welcoming and full of knowledge which has made learning dense subject matter, i.e. microbiology and anatomy, much easier to permanently learn.  Don’t panic – that’s the biggest thing – because literally everyone here is here for you and to help you become a great Aveda esthetician.  Yes you will learn a lot, and there is homeplay (Aveda’s version of homework), but it gets easier and more manageable everyday.

All of us in this program are totally different personalities and learners (I’m a Blue 2, for example), but we are all able to follow, understand and learn together.  This means that we are going to be able to do this stuff together very soon.  Stay tuned for my take on learning Aveda’s signature facial – The Elemental Nature Treatment!
